Information for Senior Citizen Exemption |
|
FROM: Elbridge Assessor’s Office RE: Sr. Citizen Exemption If you will be 65 years of age or older by year-end, own and live in a house within our township, you may be eligible for a Sr. Citizen Exemption. The Sr. Citizen exemption works on a sliding scale basis, and within Onondaga County your highest combined income must be lower than $32,400 to be eligible to qualify for the exemption. The Sr. Citizen and the Sr. STAR income information are not calculated in the same way. In order to know if you qualify you need to complete the exemption application and return the application with all income information needed to our office by the weekday of March 1st or the first Monday of March, whichever comes first. Completed applications received after this date will not be reviewed until the following year. This could affect School, Town, County, and/or Village Taxes. Be sure to answer all questions and send copies as well as list all of your income received for the year filing in Section 9. You must use your prior years income. (Ex.: Filing the application by March 1, 2006, you will use your 2004 (if you file a tax return) or 2005 (if you don’t file a tax return, we will use all of your year-end income statements, or you may use your 2005 tax return if completed by March 1st). If you are unsure of what you need to send/bring, call or come into our office during office hours and bring all your income information, we will be glad to go through it with you. Please note that items 10, 11 & 12 DO NOT APPLY. We always suggest you call before coming in. If you are a married property owner you have to show combined income. The law reads, “The combined income of all of the owners, and of any owners’ spouse residing on the premises, for the income tax year ¼”. If you file a Federal or New York State Tax Return we will need a copy of one of those forms along with copies of any schedules [B, C, E, F] attached to your tax return, and a copy of your Social Security Benefits Year End Statement (SSA-1099). If you did not file any type of tax return include copies of all sources of income and/or year-end income statements received for the year filing. The exemption is based on percentage of a sliding scale basis per combined income. Each taxing jurisdiction sets their own income limits. On the form be sure to read and complete all Sections and Statements, including your signature and phone number. If you reside elsewhere during any part of the year also include that mailing address and phone number as well. You may bring your information in during business hours or mail the form to:
Assessor’s Office If you qualify for the exemption it will automatically be applied to your tax bill starting with the next School Tax billing. You may call us after May 1st to verify your exemption if wanted. If you do not qualify you will be mailed a notice from our office no later than mid-May stating the reason why. With having the Sr. Citizen exemption you automatically receive the Sr. STAR exemption. The heading on the form is a combined Sr. Citizen and Sr. [Enhanced] STAR. Only one form needs to be filed. If you do not qualify for the Sr. Citizen, we use the same form and income information supplied and shift your application to the Sr. STAR only applicants. Should we have any questions after receiving your application, we will contact you. If you have any questions our office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM or you may call us at 315/689-7405. |
